Die Sache mit den sandigen Socken / The thing with the sandy socks

Long Beach in Long Island.

B. Strand Sand Sommer New York.

Hallo?

Check.

See you, Claire

Friends of the leaf blower,

I was at the beach over the weekend which is just around the corner for me. The beach is free and you always find a spot where you are undisturbed. The sun was shining however the sand was pretty darn cold. It didn’t matter. Shoes off, socks off and off into the fun and sand.

The late summer season is almost over and the roofed wicker beach chairs are slowly put away for winter storage. Well, Saturday they were still out. The weather was nice and the roofed wicker beach chairs manager utilized that to squeeze out the last Euros from the tourists. I'm not a tourist. I live here. I sit in the sand.

Searching for a beach in New York online, I came across several beaches. Rockaway Beach in Queens, the beaches at Great Kills Park, and among them, Long Beach in Long Iceland. Long Beach can be reached by train within 60 minutes from Penn Station, Manhattan. Not bad.

Except in my research for the best beaches in the region, I came across a small anomaly. At least for me it is one, as I cannot understand that this peculiarity exists: Apparently there are no beaches with roofed wicker beach chairs in the United States. Well, there are - if you translated it word by word- beach baskets... but in those you only bring along the lobster and bottles of champagne for the picnic on the beach. There are beach chairs, yea yea, but just not roofed wicker beach chairs as we are familiar with.

Why are there no roofed wicker beach chairs at US beaches? If there are, please send me a photo. If not, please let me know of the reasons.

Okay, other countries, other customs. No matter what, I do not get it.

Mmmmphhh. Very well. I was still somewhat compensated on my Google trip to the beaches of New York. When I approach a New York related topic I always google it first using German terms. Of course in this case too. Example: Strand Sand Sommer New York.

Surprisingly (or not) I came across a site of a major New York bookstore called "Strand Bookstore". Very well known and rather large. They sell book rarities, used works and new books. It still is privately owned and offers "18 miles of books" spread out over three floors. It also has readings by famous authors regularly. So everything a book lover like me is fascinated with. What are roofed wicker beach chairs when there are 18 Miles of Books available? I beg to differ you. Hello?

Awesome ...  you don’t even have to take off your shoes or socks. Check.

See you, Claire
